TARAPOTO
TARAPOTO
Altitude: 356 m | Climate: 22–32°C | Warm, rainiest from December to April
How to get there: Flight from Lima (1 hour) or bus (24 hours)
Tarapoto lies in the high jungle, which means it’s less hot and humid than Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado — greener, fresher, and surrounded by waterfalls. It’s the perfect destination if you want nature without the extreme heat of the lowlands.
The Blue Lagoon (Laguna Azul) in Sauce, about two hours from Tarapoto, is the region’s crown jewel — a vast turquoise lake surrounded by jungle. You can swim, kayak, or take a boat ride across its calm waters. The temperature is pleasant, and there are cozy cabins all around.
The waterfalls are Tarapoto’s greatest treasures. The Ahuashiyacu Waterfall, close to the city, drops 40 meters into a crystal-clear pool where you can swim. There are also more remote cascades, perfect for travelers seeking quiet immersion in nature.
Local cuisine is rich and hearty: tacacho con cecina (mashed plantain with dried pork), juanes (rice and chicken wrapped in bijao leaves), and inchicapi (peanut chicken soup). Tarapoto is also an excellent base for day trips — more urban and comfortable than deep jungle lodges.
Practical tip: Tarapoto is laid-back and safe. You don’t need the full jungle protection kit, but bring repellent anyway. Pack light clothes, swimwear, and comfortable sandals. It’s a family-friendly destination, ideal for combining nature with comfort.
